Jesus: The Son of God in Power (Romans 1:1-7, 2 Samuel 7:8-16)
Pastor Chuck Huckaby, January 17, 2010Part of the Romans series, preached at a Sunday Morning service
What do the Scriptures refer to when they say God has a Son? Is that sort of like Jesus is "God Junior"?
When we say "Junior" as in "Whopper Junior" it means we've ordered everything we love about a Whopper at Burger King except, not so much! Some have interpreted in that way!
But what can we learn from our scripture readings today and the narrative they weave as we work through the Book of Romans?
Reflection
When we call Jesus the “Son of God” do we think of Him as “God Junior”? Or do we realize this is a title for the promised Shepherd King after God’s own heart?
When we hear that Jesus was raised and declared the King of the World, are we living like people who have Jesus as our King? How or how not? How does Jesus’ Kingship affect your life?
Have you ever felt you were so far gone you were somehow beyond the promises of God for whatever reason? Here, Paul says that the covenant promises of God – His unearned covenant faithfulness and the fullness of His peace and blessing are available to anyone who will come under the rule of this King! Do we want these blessings? What will we repent of to find them?
Connection
Are you and I people who really know the Good News of God?
I’m asking do we know what a blessing it is to be a Christian? Are we experiencing the joy of walking as the adopted heirs of God through Jesus Christ who know what it means to serve a God who will do whatever is required to fulfill His promises to His people despite their sinfulness and weakness?

| « Paul - Set Apart For The Gospel | None | For Overflowing Hearts » |
Romans 1:1-7
1:1 Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, 2 which he promised beforehand through his prophets in the holy Scriptures, 3 concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh 4 and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord, 5 through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations, 6 including you who are called to belong to Jesus Christ,
7 To all those in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints:
Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. (ESV)
2 Samuel 7:8-16
8 Now, therefore, thus you shall say to my servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, that you should be prince over my people Israel. 9 And I have been with you wherever you went and have cut off all your enemies from before you. And I will make for you a great name, like the name of the great ones of the earth. 10 And I will appoint a place for my people Israel and will plant them, so that they may dwell in their own place and be disturbed no more. And violent men shall afflict them no more, as formerly, 11 from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel. And I will give you rest from all your enemies. Moreover, the Lord declares to you that the Lord will make you a house. 12 When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. 13 He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever. 14 I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. When he commits iniquity, I will discipline him with the rod of men, with the stripes of the sons of men, 15 but my steadfast love will not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away from before you. 16 And your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me. Your throne shall be established forever.’” (ESV)
